The Gap We Saw and the Centre We Built

A Five-Year Degree With Zero Hours of MIGS Training.

Gynaecological surgery has three approaches: vaginal, open abdominal and endoscopic. Open surgery is easier to learn but harder for the patient, longer recovery, higher complication rates and more post-operative pain. MIGS delivers far better outcomes, but has a longer, flatter learning curve. Croatia's five-year residency has no prescribed MIGS curriculum, meaning surgeons learn critical techniques in a live operating room. Fewer than 20 gynaecologists in Croatia suture laparoscopically.

It Started on a Flight Back From Rome.

In 2022, dr. Markulić and dr. Matak returned from Rome one of the first GESEA-certified centres in the world with a certification, a new friendship with dr. Istvan Argay, and an idea. Argay had just been appointed coordinator of the GESEA4EU expansion project, and that connection opened the door. Three years of training, meetings and equipment investment later, MIGZ received its accreditation as Croatia's first independent GESEA centre.

MIGZ is led by Dr. Frane Markulić and Dr. Luka Matak, two Zadar-based surgeons who built the centre from the ground up. Every course brings in world-class international instructors alongside the core team. Dr. Istvan Argay, published author on laparoscopic suturing training curricula, is a permanent part of the faculty and the reason MIGZ carries the credibility it does across the region.
